Exhibition Review | Corporate Interview: Gathering Strength Internally, Igniting the Future! Beijing University of Technology makes a grand appearance at the 2024 Sports Expo

The 2024 China International Internal Combustion Engine and Power Equipment Expo (hereinafter referred to as the 2024 Power Expo), as a leading exhibition in the field of power, has become a major stage for major power equipment companies around the world to compete and showcase cutting-edge technology in the industry. At the 2024 China International Import Expo, Beijing University of Technology made a heavyweight appearance at the exhibition. Professor Qiu Tao from the Department of Automotive Engineering at the School of Mechanical Engineering and Energy was invited by the organizers to give an interview to industry media, analyzing and introducing the industry academic research and development exhibition situation and cutting-edge trends in the field of power.

Interviewee: Professor Qiu Tao from the Department of Automotive Engineering at the School of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, Beijing University of Technology

Team Introduction: Mainly engaged in technology research and talent cultivation related to power

Question 1: What cutting-edge products and technological achievements did Beijing University of Technology showcase at this exhibition? What research and application value does it have?

Answer: This is already the 23rd Internal Combustion Engine Exhibition. Internal combustion engines are relatively mature industrial products, and it is very difficult to showcase cutting-edge or stunning technologies. But we can also see that with regulatory requirements and the launch of other categories of new energy products, the internal combustion engine industry is also progressing. Our team mainly combines "electric energy and internal combustion engine", and there are several achievements:

Firstly, based on diesel rotary engines and combined with axial motors, a high-efficiency diesel power generation system with high power to weight ratio is developed;

The second is to develop highly compact smoke and noise reduction protection devices for the extreme boundary conditions encountered by power in national defense and special fields;

The third is to combine artificial intelligence algorithms with controllers and apply them to internal combustion engine power testing to achieve intelligent perception and decision-making.

Overall, the exhibition showcases the development direction of electric drive, smoke and noise reduction devices, as well as intelligent algorithms and electrical control capabilities.

Question 2: In recent years, under the interweaving of carbon neutrality vision, energy revolution, and digital development wave, the power industry is facing unprecedented challenges and changes, and higher requirements have been put forward for the technology of engine products. How does your company view the current technological development trends in the power market? Which fields are research hotspots?

Answer: This is also a question that the industry has been thinking about. The existence of an industry depends on its ability to serve the country and the people; On the other hand, it depends on whether it can be replaced. To be honest, the internal combustion engine industry is currently facing significant challenges, especially with the emergence of new energy sources. I personally believe that with the emergence of new energy, internal combustion engines will gradually withdraw from some application scenarios, which is already evident in the field of passenger cars. However, due to the high energy density of internal combustion engines, they may still exist for a long time in certain specific scenarios. In the future, internal combustion engines will move towards low-carbon, green, and intelligent directions, which is determined by the constraints of regulations, green, low-carbon, and unmanned trends.

Question 3: What pain points do you think still exist in the current development of internal combustion engine power technology?

Answer: The development of internal combustion engines has a hundred years of history, and it is very difficult to reach a new peak in the mature industry chain. Fortunately, not only internal combustion engine technology is constantly developing, but many new technologies are also emerging in other fields. The emergence of information technology and artificial intelligence, combined with internal combustion engines, will greatly enhance their performance; The advancement of new material technology may enable the achievement of previously difficult targets in the field of internal combustion engines; The improvement of new processing and manufacturing capabilities has also significantly enhanced the reliability and consistency of products.

The integration of these technologies will help internal combustion engines reach new heights on the plateau. For example, the thermal efficiency of internal combustion engines is constantly improving, emissions are getting lower, and the adaptability of hydrogen and ammonia is constantly improving.

Question 4: As a technology R&D talent in the field of university power, what are your views and suggestions on the implementation path of deep integration and integrated development of industry, academia, and research to promote high-quality industrial development?

Answer: As a university, teaching and educating students is the primary task, while scientific research is the secondary task. However, the ultimate goal is to provide high-quality talents for society and the industry, in order to promote industry development. This is also the historical mission that universities undertake.

In terms of talent cultivation, we should not only focus on the transmission of knowledge, but also pay attention to the cultivation of abilities and thinking. This requires teachers to continuously delve into the industry, keep up with the pace of industry development, actively undertake research and development work within the industry, use practical work to drive students' talent cultivation, enhance students' professional literacy and skills, rather than simply disseminating knowledge.

Overall, industry university research cooperation should not only focus on solving a specific task, project, or technology, but should also consider long-term development more. We actually promote the development of the entire industry by cultivating people.

Exhibitions can gather various forces, allowing everyone to understand the industry, share the problems that exist in the industry, and engage in in-depth thinking.
