Industry News | The first domestic hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set has been put into commercial operation
Recently, a 300kW hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set developed by Yuchai has been put into operation in Yunmeng, Hubei. This is not only the first domestically operated hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set, but also the hydrogen internal combustion engine power with the highest actual operating power in China, marking an important breakthrough in China's hydrogen energy application field and providing innovative technology and solutions to solve the dual problems of "emission waste" and "high utilization cost" of industrial by-product hydrogen.
The hydrogen internal combustion engine generator set was jointly developed by Yuchai, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Hydrogen Green Power. The Yuchai YCK15H hydrogen internal combustion engine it is equipped with is developed based on Yuchai's mature flexible fuel platform, using advanced technologies such as ultra lean combustion, exhaust gas turbocharging, and multi-point injection in the intake duct. The thermal efficiency reaches 44%, which is the first time in the field of high-power hydrogen internal combustion engines.
In addition, what is more innovative is its ability to "on-site consume" industrial by-product hydrogen. Industrial by-product hydrogen mainly comes from industrial exhaust gases such as coke oven gas, refinery gas, and chlor alkali chemical tail gas. As an important source of hydrogen energy, it is often wasted in large quantities due to storage and transportation technology bottlenecks. Data shows that in industries such as propane dehydrogenation and chlor alkali, over 30 billion cubic meters of by-product hydrogen are directly emitted each year, which is equivalent to "releasing" a huge amount of clean energy.
It is reported that industrial waste hydrogen needs to undergo expensive purification before it can be used for power generation, and this unit can directly use industrial by-product hydrogen that has not been deeply purified to generate electricity through innovative technology. This breakthrough not only saves 40% of purification costs, but also avoids the loss of waste hydrogen being burned in vain, and the power generation efficiency remains stable at over 42%.
In the actual application of a chemical industrial park in Yunmeng, Hubei, the unit has shown significant benefits: it consumes 500000 cubic meters of waste hydrogen annually and converts it into 8 million kW · h of clean electricity. Such a huge amount of electricity can meet the annual electricity needs of 7000 households and support heating for 200000 square meters of buildings. Based on a single 300kW unit operating for 6000 hours per year, it can consume 1.4 million cubic meters of hydrogen gas and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1362t, equivalent to the annual carbon sequestration of 74000 adult trees.
The successful application of hydrogen internal combustion engine generator sets not only turns industrial by-product hydrogen into energy, but also provides practical and feasible technical support for the realization of the national "dual carbon" goal through the closed-loop mode of "nearby consumption clean power generation emission reduction and carbon fixation".
In the future, with the further promotion of technology, over 30 billion cubic meters of industrial by-product hydrogen per year is expected to be transformed from an "emission burden" into an "energy treasure".
