Tianjin Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute

TianjinThe Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute was founded in 1958 and is a directly affiliated institution of Tianjin University. Mainly engaged in research on application technology, product design and development, and testing and evaluation services for engines, vehicles, new energy power systems, and related equipment, it is a technical support unit of relevant national regulatory authorities. There are currently more than 420 employees, with technology personnel accounting for 90% of the total number of employees, including 15 professors and researchers, and more than 200 with intermediate and senior professional titles. We have established an operational system for scientific and technological research, evaluation technology research, testing technology research, and standard and regulatory research related to the fields of power and motor vehicles, which enables high-level product development. We have established national level testing platforms that are domestically leading and internationally first-class: the National Motorcycle Quality Inspection and Testing Center (Tianjin), the most powerful and earliest established testing platform in the internal combustion engine oil industry: the Machinery Industry Internal Combustion Engine Oil Inspection and Evaluation Center, and the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center, which was rated as excellent in 2020: the Light Power Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education.

Since its establishment over 60 years ago, Tianjin Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute has completed more than 1000 scientific research projects in the fields of application technology research, product development, testing technology, standard and policy regulation research, inspection and evaluation in the areas of motor vehicles, internal combustion engines, components, oil products, etc., and has won more than 100 provincial, ministerial and national level scientific and technological awards. 1、 Testing and Certification

Having passed the accreditation of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment and the qualification certification of the National Certification and Accreditation Supervision and Administration Commission, it can inspect more than 40 types of products and has a testing site that meets international standard requirements (including a 5.1-kilometer high-speed ring road and a 4.7-kilometer reliability testing road), more than 500 sets of advanced testing equipment, radio anechoic chambers, and automotive high and low temperature state testing laboratories with environmental temperatures controlled between -50 and 60 ℃. It has established a high-level technical evaluation system.


2、 Efficient and environmentally friendly digital design and development system for engines

      Based on the discipline foundation of Tianjin University and years of design and development experience at Tiannei Institute, a lean R&D design system with process capability as the core has been constructed using digital design as the driving force, solving problems such as basic theory, engineering design, experimental calibration, and technical transformation. Supported by databases and performance testing, relying on Top Down fully parameterized structural design technology and CAE simulation analysis methods covering the entire development process, we provide engineering product forward development services for enterprises.


      • Development of traditional power engines

      Successfully collaborated with enterprises to develop multiple gasoline and diesel engine products, and achieved mass production. Has been awarded multiple times as one of the "Top Ten Engines in China". A certain 1.5L series gasoline engine product has sold nearly 2 million units cumulatively.

      We have accumulated rich experience in the design of elements such as high tumble flow passages and high robustness combustion systems, and have overcome key technical challenges such as detonation limits caused by flame propagation speed. We have completed the body design and performance development of multiple high thermal efficiency engines.


      • Development of hydrogen fuel engines

      In response to the zero carbonization demand in the field of distributed power generation, research and development of a pure hydrogen fuel version engine is carried out based on a large cylinder inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine. By optimizing the valve profile design, fuel injection strategy, and combustion system organization, the problem of low power density in hydrogen fuel engines has been solved, and the development of large bore hydrogen fuel engines for vehicles has been achieved. Based on the current situation of distributed energy applications in China, a technical and economic feasibility study has been conducted on the application of hydrogen engines in the field of distributed power generation, and a solution for the zero carbon energy system of electricity hydrogen electricity has been jointly explored with central power enterprises.


      • Hybrid power system development

      Dedicated to researching hybrid powertrain configurations and developing control strategies, with a full process development system and toolchain for physical prototype vehicles, covering powertrain system matching and selection, network architecture construction, etc. We have established the capability for forward development, system simulation testing, and vehicle performance simulation testing of hybrid system control software, which can meet the personalized control model development needs of customers. In recent years, targeting the opportunities in the new energy vehicle market and meeting the market demand for small cars and low-power range extenders, we have laid out small and efficient range extender power products. This product not only fills the market gap, but also has the potential for series development, which can be expanded to various fields such as low altitude economy and non road. In addition, Tianjin Internal Combustion Engine Research Institute actively responds to national policy calls and focuses on tackling high-power diesel hybrid technology, injecting strong momentum into the localization of domestic agricultural machinery power systems.

      3、 Motorcycle product development capability

          We have an innovative technology system that covers the entire industry chain of vehicle development, from product planning, styling development, engineering development (vehicle and engine design), experimental verification, small-scale production to new product certification services.


          • Vehicle design products

          We have developed over 180 new lightweight power products for the industry, with core capabilities in new product development including vehicle styling development, innovative design for electric motorcycles, intelligent technology development for motorcycles, comprehensive performance development for motorcycles, prototype testing and verification, and resource integration for development.

          It has obvious advantages in personalized innovative design and engineering development of products. Deeply linked with numerous industry-leading enterprises, successfully designed multiple lightweight power products. The development category covers peripheral industries such as motorcycles, all terrain vehicles (ATV, UTV, SSV), snowmobiles, agricultural machinery, aerospace products, etc.

          • Motorcycle engine products

          Accumulatively designed dozens of motorcycle engines for industry enterprises, in recent years, in response to the trend of leisure and entertainment transformation of motorcycle products, developed the first 650ml large displacement motorcycle engine in China, led the completion of the design of the largest displacement 1.6-liter V-twin cylinder air-cooled American style motorcycle engine and 530ml parallel twin cylinder water-cooled luxury pedal motorcycle engine in China, as well as the design of 500ml to 700ml parallel twin cylinder water-cooled motorcycle engines and 1.0-liter V-twin cylinder air-cooled universal engines. At the same time, developed dozens of drone engines and communication products, and also developed a central drive system. After years of market verification, the products have been exported to more than ten countries such as Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.

          4、 Intelligent Manufacturing

              Initial results have been achieved in the field of intelligent manufacturing, with the intelligent PACK production line for energy storage batteries realizing a series of highly intelligent systems including cell assembly, welding, online inspection, stacking, and packaging. Truly realizing the efficient combination of digitalization and automation in intelligent manufacturing has reduced the costs of manufacturing and logistics processes, and promoted the transformation of enterprises from traditional manufacturing models to intelligent models.

              5、 Oil development and evaluation technology

                  Mainly engaged in fuel composition and performance optimization; Research on lubricant formula; Research on biodegradation and biotoxicity of lubricating oil; Research on oil additives; Evaluation technology for internal combustion engine oil products; Development of an intelligent oil online monitoring system.
