Beijing University of Technology was founded in 1960 and is a multidisciplinary municipal key university that focuses on engineering, science, economics, management, humanities, law, art, and education. In 1981, it became the first batch of master's degree awarding units approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. In 1985, it became a doctoral degree awarding unit. In 1996, it passed the national "211 Project" preliminary review and officially entered the ranks of one hundred key universities under national construction in the 21st century.
